Ecosystem

Today, monocolture prevails, with its pro's and con's. Vineyards replaced woodlands and other crops, with adverse effects on the whole ecosystem. Once one realizes the real effects this has on the environment, the need of a radical change towards an agricolture that is compatible and in sync with nature, land and men emerges.

The keys to these changes are the diversification of cultures, by planting different varities of trees and plants in the vineyard, vegetable gardens, build nests for birds. In the past, we were searching for the vineyards balance, now we're searching balance for the entire ecosystem. For us at Rivetto Winery, this means no chemicals, no systemic treatments.

We're also planting barley, oats, and clover in the vineyard, to keep the soil alive. We're keeping the soil soft, in order to avoid stress for the vines' roots, we use natural products to reduce the impact of chemicals and we produce our own compost.

WATER

Water is life, it's precious, it's scarce. It's above all a value in itself and it needs to be respected and protected. That is why I decided to start optimizing the use of waters in a small collection lake, reactivating the wells already present in our lands and the integration of artificial tanks: recycling of rain water to use in the cellar, to water the vegetable garden and all gardens of the winery is a way to preserve the local "water value".

Vegetable garden

Creating a vegetable garden is a marvellous adventure. You discover secrets that the vineyard does not reveal because it has a different pace and needs. Initially without much awareness, I brought the winery back in time, when more space was dedicated to coltures for self consumption. It's actually another way to go forward.

HERBS

Aromatic herbs go much further than their nutritional value: they provide wellbeing to both man and nature. Thanks to the essential oilds that they produce, they attract good insects, and with their microbiotic effect, they purify the environment.

TREES

Oak, hornbeam, maple, lime, birch, hippocastan, kaki, nuts, oak. Tall trees and shrubs, local trees and a Ginko, which is not local, but it's an old, strong, slow, magic tree. Altogether they represent the circulatory system of the environment, a basin where life is preserved and the environment regenerated, thanks to the organic channels that we created in which the macro-fauna and the micro-organisms can move freely.

INSECTS

They are special agents that help preventing attacks from other harmful organisms and help proliferation of positive elements. By creating a favourable environment for insects, we're starting to see again bees, the emblem of an healthy ecosystem.

BIRDS

They're the symbol of the richness of species of the environment we live in, that favours the stability of a dynamic system. Our part in this is to favour and see to this self regulation.
